Remote Desktop Connect Crashes Host Computer
When I try to connect from my Windows XP Home laptop (client) to my Windows XP Pro desktop (host) computer over my LAN, the desktop crashes with a blue screen saying it has a serious error and it is dumping physical memory. Windows error reporting says there is a driver problem, but does not list the driver. It has crashed two out of two tries. I have not yet successfully connected to my desktop with Remote Desktop. Any ideas?
Thanks, Lionman

Welcome to WD Lionman.
Can we have the stop error from the blue screen?

Blue Screen Error
The stop error says "Error caused by device drive. Unknown device driver. Stop 0x000 (000xE OXC000 0005, OXbf93da45, 0xf299a834, 0x000000 00).
I also followd some MS links from the error reporting page and found out about Dr. Watson program. Its notepad log says:
"Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Speed Disk\SDNTC.EXE (pid=1316)"
and:
"Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\PowerChute.exe (pid=1032)"
and
Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Documents and Settings\Jim Ford\Desktop\Acronis Report Utility\AcronisReport.exe (pid=1156)
and
Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\Acronis\DiskDirector\OS_Selector.exe (pid=3772)
and
Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\FarStone\VirtualDrive\building.exe (pid=2100)
and
Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton CleanSweep\csinsmnt.exe (pid=1980)
and
App: C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.0.1\program\setup.exe (pid=2816)
and
Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\AiO\Shared\bin\hpOVWR07.exe (pid=3184)
etc. There were many more and of course the notepad file is very large. I just tried to put a few key lines in here.
I don't know if this is relevant, but I updated the desktop from xp home to pro right before using Remote Desktop for the first time.
Thanks for any help.

P.S. I'm thinking of trying Radmin in place of Remote Desktop. It has good references. Any experience with it?

Yes Radmin is fine although you have to pay for it after the initial trial period. I have used it before.
RealVNC is a good free alternative.
From the first part of the Dr Watson log it looks like your system has some serious issues. Are these all definitely related to the stop error when you tried remote desktop, or from previous BSOD's?
I guess RDP could have issues if your video drivers are not right. What video card do you have in there and do you have the latest drivers for it?
I've never done an upgrade from Home to Pro so can't say if this issue is related to that, however generally it is not a good idea to perform upgrade installs because more often than not you end up with screwy errors like you are experiencing now.
I'm assuming you downloaded the latest version of RDP client for your XP Home laptop? This is available here. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...dclientdl.mspx
