USB 2.0 2.5" drive not recognized properly

i have a hitachi 60gig 2.5" laptop drive in an external usb 2.0 case that doesn't load properly.

i know this drive worked @ one time because i copied all my music files to it for someone to borrow. now, when i plug it up, i get the "found new hardware" & the "safely remove hardware" icon comes up down by the clock (forget what this area is called LOL)

when i goto device manager, it shows up in disk drives as "disk drive" & says it is loaded properly, but doesn't show in my computer as an available drive.

now i also have a 100gig 3.5" hdd in 5.25" external case that loads properly, shows in device manager & my computer & works just fine.

so what am i missing??? like i said....i know it worked @ one time, so trying to figure out if it is a defective usb case, hard drive, or just a pc glitch.

any help would be appreciated

IF you let your buddy borrow it and IF he/she didn't use the safely remove option then it IS possible it is now ready to be reformatted at least.

I do not pretend to understand all the ramifications BUT: you have 2 options with USB connected items - the Safely Remove one and the Just Hook It Up, Do It and Remove It.

Here is how it works under XP Pro.

If you connect the device, then look at it's properties and select Policies you get 2 choices:

1 - optimize for quick removal (no safe removal process necessary)

2 - optimize for performance (safe removal process necessary)



So in one case you just copy the files one way or the other then yank the plug. In the other, you allow Windoze to make sure all interface stuff has stopped and are 'SAFE'.

Don't get me wrong - In the real world it seems many many many of these external disks fail, quit, shudder, twist and just perversely tick you off for no reason other than that they can.



If it was just a transfer and you had nothing critical on that drive, do some research on reformatting that PARTICULAR external then experiment.

Try the drive on another system and see if it works there to narow down possibilities. In many cases its the lead or xternal case that is the issue and in some cases its the hard drive itself. Hard drives are a very sensitive piece of equipment and being in an external format means they have a rougherr life than an internal hard drive.

Does the hard drive click click click?
Does it work in another machine? If so its a mater of settings
Have you tried new usb cable
Have you tried new external case/ribbon?
