Sounds like it could be feedback from the MIC. In your sound recorder properties see if you can turn the gain down. This also happens sometimes if the mic is near speakers.

the microphone is unplugged now but ever since i tried to use the sound recorder on xp home edition the speakers continue to emit a series of high pitched noises its hard for me to describe them but its as though you were hearing high pitched whale calls repeating again and again with intermittant breaks in the series so no microphone still have noise Its literally driving me nuts I am about ready to throw my computer off the deck and watch it shatter please god somebody make it stop if i play anything else it continues in the backround

    sound card

Click your volume icon and open the audio controls. click on properties. check on playback and record. make sure the microphone box is not checked on playback, and is checked on record.
    Hope this helps.
