tried everything i can think still yellow excl!
well i have an asus mobo (A7v8x-x) and i had to reinstall windows on my box cause i had a power outage when i was upgrading to sp2 and when i went to repair xp it wouldnt let me so i just humbly reinstalled everything. except i can not find my mobo disk and had to look up all the drivers on the net. i believe i have everything that i need but none of them seem to fix my sound issues. i have searched the threads and seen some of the answers given in this case but none really fit my postion.
yellow exlamation points are as follows
multimedai controller
and
multimedia video controller
i am not to worried about the video one cause i have a separte ati radeon 1300 and it works fine. but i installed the soundmax file on the asus website for the xp version i also installed the 4in1 pack but i am still without sound. i found a couple other files mentioned in some posts and tried to use them but one of them i am still clueless about file (a7v8xx08.awd) not sure what that one is for
any help getting my sound back on would be great

You may need to uninstall your sound in device manager before you reinstall new sound drivers.Go to the site below. Find File Version 5.12.01.3663
SoundMAX Audio Driver version 5.12.01.3663 WHQL driver for Windows 98SE,ME,2000,XP ( File size 18.9MB )....

Do you have any other multimedia cards in your computer such as a tv-tuner or capture card? Can you post a screenshot of your device manager and/or run this utility linked here to tell us device info about your system? I am thinking there is another multimedia device in there somewhere you are overlooking.

Well judging from your device manager list it looks like the sound card is installed. I have had similar situations on some of the Dell Optiplex systems we use at the school (they use SoundMax audio too). Can you tell me if you go to control panel and go to Sounds and Audio devices. If you double click and open Sounds and Audio Devices does it list your sound card or does it say something like no audio device installed? Because I have seen this before where in device manager it says everything is functional, but control panel says there is nothing there. I tried everything with those systems too and the only thing that worked was replacing the motherboard as the sound is integrated. Speaking with Dell Premiere Access technical support they told me that there was a problem with the SoundMax chipset revision in some of the computers which was fixed on their later motherboards.

Glad you got it working. Computers are very moody sometimes. I can't tell you how many times I got something working and had no idea what I did to make it work.
