RDRAM puzzle

I have a Dimension 8100 and it uses rdram. My OS is ME, don't know if that
matters.

I bought some memory upgrade. I only had 128 MB, so I bought 512 MB.

My question is, the 128 is 600-53 (nonECC). I'm guessing that means it runs
at 600 Mhz. The 512 is PC800-45 (ECC). 800 Mhz I'm guessing.

Should I leave the 128/4d nonECC 600-53 installed or will it slow down my
512/8 ECC PC800-45 too much?

I don't think you're supposed to mix noECC with ECC either? (I meant to buy
nonECC but musta picked the wrong one by mistake. I bought them online, so I
really don't want to go thru the hassle of returning them if I can still use
them without causing any harm.

What's the best way I should configure this?

if you are using rdram, I would assume the 128mb is in two 64 mb modules with two blank socket chips..did you buy 2 256 mb modules? rdram has to be installed in pairs.

so yes, run it without the 2x64mb modules. (or experiment with both to see what the difference is)
Are you sure the 2x64 are NON ECC? Crucial is showing only ECC ram for that computer. have a look here
Do the 2x64 strips have the same number of chips each as the 2x256?

Yep. the 2x64's say nonECC right on them. The link you lead me to says my system supports ECC but I shouldn't mix nonECC with ECC.

Guess I'll just have to chunk the 2x64's. I was just tryin to get as much memory without buying a Gig. Rdram is outrageously expensive. I found the 2x256's for $160 for the set at CheapestRDRAM.com.

Can't tell if they have the same number of chips, there's a heat sheild covering them. But by looking at the back it looks like the 2x64 have 4 and the 2x256 have 8.

I have purchased off of eBay a number of times - ONLY buy using Pay Pal and you are pretty safe - better also that the vendor has 100+ sales and 99.2+ feedback.

My opinion anyway.

CCT the ram has already been bought...

idontknow... apparently the 8100 will tolerate ecc and non ecc, it will just run all of it as non ecc. Put the strips in in pairs with the largest pair first.
