Thumbs down scanners causing computer problems

I recently tried in vain to fix a guys computer that would hang during booting. He was running AOL an hour after New Years when his computer died and wouldn't boot except to Safe Mode. He eventually gave up and bought a new Gateway 2000. Then he hooked up his parallel port Microtek scanner and installed the software. Then his new computer failed to boot. So he uninstalled the software on both computers and they work.
Story #2 isn't as bad. Parallel port Visioneer Paperport scanner. This guy's computer was unbelieveably slow. I'd just looked at it a few weeks before, so I knew it wasn't normal. It all started when he installed his Adobe scanner software.
Story #3 is my computer. I have an Acer Priza USB scanner. Since installing the scanner, I've had several unusual blue screens and lockups.
Anyone else have similar notes on scanners? Anyone know what to do to make scanners in general user-freindly? I've never heard of so much hassle from any other peripheral device in my life!

As for story 1, This happens to me if I set the parralell port set as ECP+EPP, problem goes away if I set as EPP only
