[RESOLVED] USB 250MB Zip drive locks up pc

I have had this problem with my zip drive since day one. Every single time I delete or take something off of the zip disk to put it onto the computer, it freezes my computer. I disabled my anti-virus program to see if that would cure it, nope, that didn't work either. I went to Iomega's forum and there are others that have the same problem, but no one seems to know what the problem is. I was thinking that it could be an IRQ conflict, could I be right? I have tried everything else.

I run the same USB 250mg zip Ive'only had it not eject once, its never lock up the puter.... If you can give more detail about your computer, What make? how much mem? the chipset? and anything that would help to pin your lockup down....Win95/a,b,c win98/se Me, or any sofware running at the time it locks.

It is an external drive. I am running Win98. I don't have anything running in the system tray (only the clock). I did have McAfee running, but turned it off thinking this would cure the problem, but that didn't work. I have a Gigabyte GA-6BXC Intel 440BX AGPset mobo. 400 MHZ Celeron processor, and 128 Meg's of SDRAM. Let me know if you need anymore info about my system. I also have an Award bios - bios date 02/10/99

First check in your BIOS setup that the parallel port mode is set to EPP. ECP mode and ZIPdrives do not get along at all.

If that is OK, then your guess of an IRQ conflict is possible. The easiest way to check this is to go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager, and double click on "Computer". This gives you a neat list of all the IRQ's being used on your computer. If something other than LPT1 is using IRQ 7 then you've got a problem. Let us know.

Oh, are you running a printer through the passthru port of the ZIP drive?

Check system properties see if you have under hard disk controllers (Iomega win98 usb controller), Under Disk drives--(Iomega zip 250), under USB Controllers-- (iomega zip 250 usb driver)... and check to see if its listed in add/remove, if it is then uninstall and reinstall....

The parallel port mode is set to SPP. And, no I am not running a printer through the passthru port of the zip drive. This is a USB zip drive, I am running it through the USB port. It could be an IRQ conflict, but I am still not sure.

Maybe I would have been better off getting an internal drive.
It is not using IRQ 7. It is using IRQ 11 which is the USB port on my machine. I could uninstall it and then reinstall it, which is a pain, but what do I have to lose. The IRQ 11 is also sharing this with PCI steering, would that matter?

Oops, sorry about leading you the wrong way. I didn't see what kind of drive you had, until I looked at the title of the topic.

IRQ 11 is ok, as long as it's not sharing an IRQ with anything else. Can you get any other USB devices to work on your computer?

Oh, that is okay I don't have another USB device to try on it. BUT, it is sharing PCI steering holder, is that okay? I have no idea what pci steering is.
