Standby Button Greyed Out
I have recently had Windows XP re-installed and the guy that did it disabled the login so that he could re-boot without having to go through the login process everytime.
I have re-enabled the login no problem there, but when I close down now, I notice that the Standy button when I shut down is greyed out and not available.
In addition when I shut down the screen changes from colour to black and white.
He did update all the drivers from Mircosoft when he re-installed.
It is a Dell Dimension 4600.
He will come and fix it but can't get his head around what it might be.
Any help much appreciated.

Try this: http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/...oreStandby.htm
The other usually recommended option is to re-install the grahics drivers.

I have tried this link as suggested -
http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/...oreStandby.htm
The PC resets itself to custom size when I restart and the standby button is still greyed out when I go to close down again.
After Step 9 should I press the Set Button?
Please bear in mind that if it goes crazy I don't have the abilities to fix it.
Thanks.

It's quite likely that you need to update the chipset and video drivers. The problem is that there are several video drivers for the 4600. Can you post your service tag please? It might narrow down the options... or post what video option you had when you ordered the pc.

To enable US to help, please Download and run Everest Home (it is free):
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Once you download it, click on it and let it install and then run it from the icon on your desktop.
Click on the + sign beside 'Computer', then on 'Summary', then go to the VERY top of the screen and click on 'report'.
Cursor over 'quick report-summary' and then click on 'plain text' and then click on 'save to file' and change the 'save in' folder to 'Desktop' and then click 'Save'.
Clear all your open windows and on the Desktop click on that 'report.txt' icon - this will open it in a text editor
(probably Notepad) and then use your mouse to highlight ALL the 'debug' entries and delete them, then use your mouse to hilight all the remaining text then copy and paste it to here.
For future reference: once you open Everest, click on file, preferences, report and uncheck the 'include debug information in the report' box. People rarely want to see that stuff.

Unfortunately that doesn't narrow it down enough - Do you have the service tag?
here are all the drivers... As you can see there is 13 possible drivers for the video.

Sorry, that still doesn't narrow it down. Please follow CCT's instructions.

Sorry if I am appearing thick here but there are several options regarding downloads and it also says further down the screen that -
Limitations: Lavalys has discontinued the free edition. This is unsupported.
Which button should I press?

Unsupported doesn't mean 'it don't work!'.
Download from any of the links (east coast USA probably fastest) and follow the instructions I gave.

Based on your service tag...
http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid=
There is a BIOS update as well as a motherboard chipset driver update.
I would go with the motherboard chipset update first.

Okay I give up, I'm confused! Just which one of the buttons on Everest Home are you supposed to click to get a download?
I have tried clicking on Scan Computer For Driver Updates which gives a screen display but does not download so that I can run it from the Desktop.
There is Spyware Doctor which I assume is not the one to use.
System Info gives loads of choices, which one if this is the one?
MajorGeeks TX 4 options?
Internode?
Everest Free Edition 2.20 just gives a load of anonymous entries.
Nothing I have pressed so far gives me a download to my desktop and a screenshot as shown when you press screenshot.
HELP!!!!!

I suggest you call 'the guy that did it' and get him to read this thread then fix it or ask for help in so doing.
Or, wait for someone more patient than I am.
Sorry.
