Plenty!
But to narrow it down, I need some details
What ISP is this?
What is the model of the dsl modem?
What operating system is on the computer?
What service pack level is on the computer?

Right so the easiest first thing to try is to turn off the router and shutdown the PC. Now with the pc shutdown, turn the router back on and leave it for ten minutes (to make absolutely sure it's got itself sorted). Now turn the PC back on and wait till you get all the way to desk top (no egg timers) and then check the IP.
Start, run and type in
cmd
click ok
type in the black box
ipconfig /all
hit the enter key
Right click the black box and select mark
highlight everything in the black box and post it if you don't get an internet connection.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

dave, Let's start with the basics. Are all statues lights on the modem green? You have synch? I'll take that as a yes.
I'm assuming you are using XP. Open your network connections in Control Panel and see what's there. If you have any dialup connections or Internet connections go ahead and delete them. Next, right click on your network adapter and left click on properties. Now click on TCP/IP and then the properties button. Verify that all the settings you see there are set to automatic. Then shut down the computer, unplug power to the modem, and wait 30 seconds or so. Now, plug in the modem and wait until it does it self-test, then turn the computer on again.
After you've restarted, open your web browser and type the address of the modem; 192.168.1.1 into the location bar. This should take you to Westel's configuration page, and you will need to have the information Verizon gave you such as your username, password, and the default login information for the modem. There's normally a setup wizard that will walk you through the configuration process. Then you recycle the computer and modem once again.
If you don't have connectivity after the reboot, then you either have a defective modem, or a line problem, and you need to call Verizon.
