Did repair install over Sony Vaio preinstalled, what happened???

I have a sony vaio with preinstalled xp home.

I have new XP home OEM with an activation key that was never used.

I did the repair install, and used the key on the back of the Sony.

When I tried to activate online it said the keys did not match.

I got to the screen where they give you the 50 digit number and the MS voice system gives you a 45 digit number to key in.

That worked and its activated.

I never used the key on my new XP cd.

So what happened?
Was the key on the Sony wrong?
Did I activate with some other key that was stored.
I didn't use the new xp key so it could not have used the new keys.. right?

No, XP allows activation in these circumstances... actually the key on the bottom of the machine is not the key that the Vaio was shipped with... this allows the vendor to use one bulk key over an entire range. Had you done a repair install using a Dell OEM disk, it would have never asked you for a key and the keys would have continued to match. Using a separate OEM CD caused the old activation data to be compared with the new. For some reason this never activates online, but always activates fine over the phone.

It downloaded the XP updates but it wont install them.

When I tried it from windows update it said there was a problem on the computer that prevented it from installing the updates.

I tried disabling all the startup items in msconfig.

I rebooted and when ir shut down it showed it started to install
1 of 87 updates, but then it stopped and shut down without installing any of them.

When I rebooted it showed alot of disk activity so it looked like it may have been installing something, but when I shut down it showed it was installing updates 1 of 95, but then it shut down without installing them

Any ideas?

Go onto the windows update site and look at your update history...click on the failed install(s) what's the error code(s)?

It installed the update installer 3.1

the others get error 0x008008 installation error

Can you check that error code again? It doesn't seem to exist in windows update...

This is what I get for the error on media player

OK, you probably need to register a bunch of dlls.... dial a fix will do that for you or do it manually by opening a cmd box and typing

net stop wuauserv

then each of the following commands

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

finally restart the update service

net start wuauserv
and then try again.

I tried dial a fix.

I checked fix windows update
flushed software distribution
clicked GO.

It downloaded the update files again but did not install any again.

I tried the cmd box
net stop wuaserv had system error 1060
"the specified service does not exist as an installed service"

Could you try again and make sure of your spelling? The spelling is different in your post - you are missing a "u".

If the spelling is correct then

Click Start, run and type in
services.msc
In the window that opens on the right is a list of the services
Can you see in the list of services
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
These should both be set to automatic and started.

I ran the CMD entries that you gave me.

That did not help.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service was set to manual, so I changed it to automatic.

That worked.

I have done the same thing, but I can't get activated using the phone or with a call to microsoft activation customer service. I have two Sony Vaio's. I took the hard drive out of one with XP home and put it into my newer Sony Vaio that has XP home installed. I had to do a repair install of windows to get windows to work (2 different mobos), Well, windows xp home booted fine, but won't activate. I'm stuck. Phone call to microsoft activation told me to call microsoft customer service to tell them I need a new key and told me to call Sony to say their key doesn't work. So was I not supposed to take out the hard drive out of my old sony with 120 GB of data??

Welcome to Windrivers Cutehumour

Sony don't expect you to do that sort of thing. They expect you to use the new hard drive and transfer the data from the old computer. This is about what Sony are doing, not about Microsoft activation. No doubt Sony will tell you to do a factory reset....
