I had a new dard drive installed and the sound worked fine for about 3 weeks but I kept getting a message saying new PCI device but it wasn't able to locte software by internet or on driver discs or XP disc, This may have no connection?
Now there is no sound at all (the speakers have been checked and work)
There used to be a SoundMax control panel, but there is now only an icon with a red circle and diagonal line across the icon.
When I check control panel, sound and audio devices, Volume tab; it says "no audio device"
Under the Hardware tab all of the deviosces listed show as working properly.
Can anyone offer advice please?
Many thanks

The driver is here;
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...1&model=A8V-VM
To install drivers from the internet:
go into Windows Explorer, left click on Desktop, then File, then New and then Folder - name the folder XXXDrivers (where XXX = type, eg, AudioDrivers)
go to the site for your driver, find the RIGHT one for your mobo and OS,(click on the nearest site to you if appropriate) and then download button - when asked where to 'save' the download specify your desktop folder XXXDrivers and wait until the download is complete.
Once it is done, clear your screen and click on the desktop folder and then on the file inside - if it is a zip or rar file it will need to be unzipped or unpacked - make sure if you are asked to specify where to unzip/unpack to tell it to do so to the XXXDrivers folder.
Once you are done that, uninstall the old drivers for the device and then select the device and specify update drivers and direct the search to the folder you made (don't let Windows do it).
I would suggest you also install/re-install the chipset drivers FIRST!

Thanks CCT,
everything is great up to this bit;
"Once you are done that, uninstall the old drivers for the device and then select the device and specify update drivers and direct the search to the folder you made (don't let Windows do it).
I would suggest you also install/re-install the chipset drivers FIRST!"
Where do I find the 'old drivers' and how do I uninstall them?
When I go to adiou devices from control panel i have the following things listed under 'hardware'
Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170A
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs
Am I in the right place? (as you can see I'm not at all experienced with how PCs work!)
Thanks

In your case, click Start,Control Panel, Add or Remove programs and look for something that says High Deinition Audio' - if nothing there, ignore that procedure.
If it is there, it should be like 'ADI High....' - uninstall it.

Thanks,
there's nothing like that in the programs listing.
I think I've done everything you've suggested apart from installing the 'chipset drivers', not sure how/what that means.
Still no sound and still showing the wizard message "found new hardware - PCI device when I switch on" is this related to the sound card drivers?
Thanks

Well, the chipset drivers can be critical - it appears that motherboard was made for Vista specifically - did you downgrade?

Nope haven't downgraded as far as I know (I just turn the thing on and off!).
I've tried installing the unzipped files that I downloaded as per the original instruction (the file is called ADI_V51014151) but i get an error message telling me;
"Installation failed! the audio driver files do not support your computer hardware"
I have also downloaded and installed the drivers (for XP) from the website you listed above, but it has made no difference so far.
Help!

Although not listed under the Audio driver tab at Asus, you apparently need the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture drivers as well (installed FIRST).
On top of that, you need the original version THEN the update to support High definition audio.
The original: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221/
The Update is at the Asus link I gave you under Utilities, for XP, KB888111; http://support.asus.com/download/dow...1&model=A8V-VM
Download those, install the first, reboot, install the second, reboot, install the audio driver you got earlier, reboot.

Driver Terrier
Did you manage to install the chipset drivers Chudleigh?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
