I am refurbishing some 486 , for some
friends , but am having trouble finding
"CHEAP" ISA compatable soundcards, most
of them seem to need pentium grade cpu's
anybody know of a brand I can use?

SB Vibra 16 PnP cards also work well in 486s when the proper config utilities are set up.
