PROBLEM: Asus 40X max cd-rom can no longer detect audio. Windows cd player still plays music. But all cd-ripping programs (ALL!) say "there is no audio disc in the cd-rom".
SOURCE: Installing mp3.com's Beam-It software (in beta) is what messed it up. I ripped a cd (about my 500th), installed the software, went to rip another cd, and it no longer worked.
WHAT I'VE TRIED: Uninstalling and re-installing all cd-ripper programs. Re-installing all cd-rom drivers. Physically removing and re-installing the cd-rom itself.
