Dragged this old pc from oblivion, was running and booted fine, reset and got error 162 run system setup.Determined was battery and replaced with an external plug type.It will now not boot at all w/o a boot disk, once it does it says no fixed drives,i know both the cd and hdd was working before battery failed.I got the System configuration utility from compaq but apparently part of the bios is stored on my now unseen hd.The only thing i can think of is cmos was corrupted by battery failure (was a few days before i replaced) and is not retrieving needed/or initializing needed hdd driver to complete boot.Where can i get a copy of the cmos to install ?.Have tried diagnostics, drivers etc,but w/o access to hdd is a pointless endeavor,as all need access to that to run/install.Running out of options on this one and clueless, all was fine before battery failure.

you tried recreating the bios (http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Deskpro/us/download/7158.html)?

How about checking the hard drive connections?
