presario 1230, internal modem not found

can anyone help me
i have a Presario 1230 and it had be packed away for a few months, when i turned it on and gave it a freshen up (re-installed win98se with all drivers) but it wont detect the modem, has anyone had a simular problem and how do you fix it

Also boot to safe mode (press f8 just before windows loads) and see if the modem is stuck as an unknown device or pci communications device.
