Howdy,

I've got a Presario 5410 that is puking on start up (Win XP Home) and is hanging at the mup.sys driver (in safe mode). The problem started during a routine visit to Microsoft for a critical update (go figure).

Fine. I'll just boot off of a CD and either fix or nuke this PC and rebuild it.

Wrong.

The only two boot options in the bios are for either the floppy drive, or hard drive. Neither of the two CD's are an option in the boot mode of the bios.

Yes, IDE2 is working.
Yes, the option to allow a removable media to boot is enabled.
Yes, the bios was reset and all the options were painfully examined and re-set.

HP seems to think that this Presario doesn't have/need a bios update.

Nothing seems out of order to me.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. If I can just get it to boot off of a CD, I'm home free.

And you're saying that there is no option to boot from the CDROM? Does the BIOS id all of your devices properly?

Updating the BIOS (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?product=93299&lang=en&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c00007682#doc) If a BIOS update is not listed, the Compaq Presario model does not require a BIOS update at this time.

Don't these machines have the hidden partition recovery mode?
