For people who use the Presario 1210 notebook, you may have trouble finding a modem driver. I had trouble too, but alas, I found a solution. The Presario 1210 notebook's modem is called "Compaq Presario 336-DF". This driver is not included with windows 95, but it is included with Windows 98 + 98SE, but not installed by default. If you use a CD-ROM to install windows 98 or 98 SE, this solution is for you. If you have windows 95, the procedure is pretty much the same if you are doing a clean install. Windows ME installs the driver automatically.

This driver is located in the \drivers\modem\compaq folder. The INF is called cpq33697.inf (or something similar, I don't remember). To install this driver follow this procedure:

1. Open the system control panel by Right-clicking 'My Computer' and click 'Properties'.
2. Click the 'Device Manager' tab.
3. You will see a list of devices. Find one that says "Other Devices". Expand this list by clicking the plus sign.
4. You will now see a device called "Unknown Device". Double click this.
5. You are now in the Unknown Device's properties. Click the 'Driver' tab.
6. Click 'Update Driver'.
7. A box pops up. Click next. Then click the second option that lets you choose the driver manually. The next screen displays a list of devices like monitor and mouse. Select 'modem' and click next.
8. The wizard is not going to show the choice by default. You have to do this yourself. Click 'Have Disk'.
9. Insert the Windows 98 or 98 SE CD-ROM at this point, if you already haven't done so.
10. Click 'Browse'.
11. In the drive box, select the drive the CD-ROM is in, typically drive D:. Now, in the folders box, double click drivers, double click modem, double click compaq. A list of INF files appears on the left. Select CPQ33697.INF. Click ok. click ok.
12. The main wizard window will show you the device name (Compaq Presario 336-DF) and the path to the INF. Verify that it is correct. Click 'Finish' and the driver should start installing. Once done, the driver properties window should now say Compaq Presario 336-DF with a phone icon next to it. Click OK. Exit the system properties window and restart the computer to make sure the drivers installed.

Somewhere in the middle of steps 11 and 12 a window will pop up telling you to select your country. Click your country and click change. Say yes to the window that says are you sure.

Congratulations! You have installed the modem driver for the Compaq Presario 1210 notebook PC.

The process I posted above may be confusing. Try it out first. If you still have problems, email me @ jtmal0723@hotmail.com and I will explain each step. I will post screenshots of the procedure if I have the time.
