I have an evo d510 and I need to run win98 on it, because the only hard drive I have available right now is only 340Meg and win98 is all that will fit on that.

It runs okay but with only basic VGA graphics. Very lumpy. Not much good.
It should be capable of much better than that. So I set about looking but I have just ended up confused and uncertain as to what to install.

The EVO D510 SFF has the Intel 845G chipset.

The specsheet I have lists graphics like this:

Intel Extreme Graphics (integrated with Intel 845G chipset)
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX200 64-MB with DVI-I (CMT and SFF only)

and thereby confuses me.

I have downloaded a driver from Intel for the 845G chipset graphics but it says it won't work with a third party card installed. This spec sheet looks to me like a third party card is installed: an NVidia GeForce2.

Is this right? So then I shouldn't install the Intel drivers?

So what should I install?

And the spec sheet also says, in the GeForce section, that it is only supported on win98 with the addition of compaq softpaqs, whatever they are I read in Compaq's site that they don't have them for win98.

Can anyone direct me the right way to get better graphics on this machine for a while until I can get a better hard drive on it and install win2K or XP ?

thank you.

regards,

ab :)

I take it you've already been to HP/Compaq's website for your D510 SFF:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=97130&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=316517&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=20

As you can see, there is a BIOS update 15 June 2005. Once you do that, try installing the Intel Chipset Support and then the Graphics. Plus, you will find all other kinds of neat stuff there.

You can find all kinds of Manuals here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&lang=en&cc=us&docIndexId=179911&taskId=101&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=316517

As for your hard drive problem, I'm sure you can find a decent disk nowadays fairly cheap. 340MB will hardly hold your Operating System, much less anything else.

'sokay, I figured it out. For those with a similar problem with the EVO D510's the answer is to download Intel's Extreme Graphics driver. Search under that name in that site.

Graphics Driver [WIN9X1361.EXE] (7254KB) is what I got. It barfs
twice on install looking for ikch8xx.cat and, later, isb8xx.cat -
but both can be safely skipped, it doesn't really need them.

Yep, the HDD is a problem. I'm currently looking at 98lite and around there for solutions.

I've heard that about half of the stock installation of win98 can be dispensed with. That interests me very much. I don't doubt it. But which files exactly? I'm trying to find out but got no replies yet.

Thanks for the input.
