I have had complete crash on my laptop and need Back-up disks/CD or Recovery disks/CD to start from scratch. Compaq can supply but presently at least 6 weeks wait!.
Anyone with these I could copy please?.

I know, it's not the actual OS itself. Either you wait for the Restore CD to show up from Compaq or you can go ahead and install a generic version of WinDoze and then try to downlod all of your particular drivers from the above link.

Reinstalled generic Windows 98 and then all updated drivers from Compaq site.
All running OK. Slight problem with Video driver I think as screen occasionally flashes colours, but have installed the only available driver from Compaq but may have to look elsewhere for this.
Hopefully this will keep running for now.
