Post Win 95 won't accept settings / drivers

I have a GA-612 8Mb AGP graphics accelerator card. I have followed the instructions with regard to installation ie. first installing the USB supplement, then the DirectX6 software and then the i740 display driver for Win95/98, however Windows does not accept the settings/drivers and gives me a message saying that the hardware settings are incorrect or somesuch. I then have to resort to using the Chips and Technologies driver in order to use Windows properly. I cannot, however, play games with these settings.
When I run the driver setup program from the CD, the AGP GART Setup says that it does not reognize the chipset on my motherboard. I suspect this is the source of the problem. My motherboard is a "PC100 Slot 1 M726 Systemboard". Does this mean that the accelerator card is somehow non-compatible with my motherboard?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
