Question Unidentified Sound Card

I am having trouble idetifying what type of Media Vision sound card I have. I've tried matching it up with the diagrams shown on this site, there isn't any FCC-ID to look up, and I've even tried to search by the chip manufacturer. Windows 95 recognizes it as a Thunder Board, but it doesn't match the board diagram I found on here. It's a 16 bit board, using the Crystal chipset, the jumper settings are for 220 and 300. It also has 3 CD controller busses, Sony, Panasonic and Mitsumi. There is only the S/N to identify it. The main chip has "Crystal" followed by the Media Vision symbol (MV). I've tried everything I can think of to get the card to work properly (different MV drivers as well as SB drivers) and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping someone has some idea what this card is. Thanks

Dan

Dan,

I don't recall MediaVision using any chips stating the name "Crystal" on it; however, I could be mistaken.

If you can't find the FCC-ID, or the Part Number (like 650-022-01), then the only method left for identifying it is by the chipsets.

Start at the upper left working downward, then shifting to the right and continuing, make a list of the chips on the board. Post that list as a reply to this message. Some of the tags may actually be silkscreened on the board.

I never payed attention to that before, but all the 3 SCSI port MediaVision sound cards used the Jazz-16 chip.

Example Card:
-------------
650-0123-01 Deluxe MCD card
aka Deluxe Sound Board
Audio/Sound Cards, Deluxe MCD
Drivers & diagram
MVA 416 U4, MV TIF U11, U22, U21, Y U13, Jazz 16 MVD1216 U37 chipsets
Sony 34pin, Mitsumi 40pin, Panasonic 40pin connectors
Korg Board connector

DJumper,

Left:
3CD Controllers: 2 Chips:
34p Sony, 40p Mitsumi, 40p Panasonic U1 HD74LS244P (made by Hitachi ? )
U5 HD74LS245P
Jumpers:
JP6
JP5
JP4
3 Chips:
3514JSK (TI made), HD74LS74AP
PLACE20V8H-25PC/4 (AMD)

Middle:
3 Chips:
1 large marked with yellow sticker "S/N3056876" nothing under sticker
Crystal CS4201A
Crystal MV CS4121-CQ ("MV" MediaVision logo)
9403 GS printed on board

Right:
J2 CD-ROM IN
3 SCSI Controllers (?)
J6 4p (beside J7 LINE IN port)
J8 4p (beside J9 MIC IN port)
J10 14p (beside Vol. Control, J11 SP OUT (under Vol.))
GamePort

The card is well labeled as far as jumper settings and meanings go, but the aren't any indentifying markings other than the QA/QC sticker on the back which places the board around 1994. The QA/QC numbers are also listed which doesn't help but I figured I'd mention anyway. I've tried going to the Cirrus Logic site (owners of Crystal) but couldn't find the chipsets listed anywhere. the board length is the size of an ISA slot. I've even contacted the makre of the comp. I scavenaged the card out of (Samsung Sensor SP-386SX) but they claim it didn't originally have a sound card. I'm stumped.

Dan

Dan,

That is not a MediVision card. The Crystal chipsets your card has were used by Crystal Lake and Creative Technologies labs. I am fairly certain that card is a Crystal Lake production using Crystal Lab's chips.

Check these guys out, and you may have to dig very deep into their websites: http://members.tripod.com/~crystalake/ccwt/readme.txt http://www.crystal.com/
