Unhappy Motorola SM56 PCI modem

Please could you tell me why my modem with the correct drivers (Motorola SM56 PCI Speakerphone Modem: Release 3.02 ADO4 Build 7.0 ) connects at 16,800 bps instead of 56,000 bps. I have set the modem to connect at 115,200 and 57,600 bps speed but it still displays 16,800. My ISP is Freeserve. I have a AMD K6-2tm 333CPU, 64 SDRAM, running Windows 98. I have changed the settings to UK using Com4 as I am using an internal modem card. How can I make my modem run at its correct speed?

Yes I know how you feel.
I have recently bought a new PC from emachines, a 300mh AMD K62,this PC came fitted with a motorola soft modem and I have not been able to connect faster than 28800, I have exhausted all ideas. This is why I am here.I have decided to use my old faithful tasmanian devil 56k (HARDWARE modem).

Try unplugging all other tele. equipment which shares the same line.

This worked for me. I found that my speakerphone was causing noise on the line.

Disconnecting it increased my speed from 28k to 50k!

Cool

Well, this is true about all modems and connections. The speed you connect at is directly dependent on the following factors:
[*]distance between your computer and your ISP via the phone company (shorter distances = higher speed)[*]quality of phone line - this include: if the phone lines are recent or old; if they are hanging on street poles or underground; number of telephone devices connected on the same line and their quality; cable used and quality of the jack connections[*]modems used by your ISP, and the protocols accepted (see v.90 versus 56kflex) - you should use, if possible, EXACTLY the same type of modem your ISP use, or something they recommend[*]note that you can NOT connect at 56k. Phone regulations allow maximum 53k/s at the best physical conditions, so it is very hard to achieve this in reality. "56"k connections work only if your ISP has a digital connection to the phone company; in that case, you will be able to download at 56k maximum, but uploads are still limited at 33.6k.[/list]
I was able to connect at 14,400 at best. I had my phone line changed to a digital trunk of the phone company, and it suddenly went up to 24,000. Next, I bought the same modem my ISP uses, an US Robotics Courier 56k($250 a piece) and now I connect at 28,800. At the office, which is half a mile away from the ISP, I get 36k easy.

There is no certain rules to be followed in order to have a faster connection. Just keep in mind these general guidelines and you'll be fine. Happy connecting and good luck!

So if I disconnect my two phones, and my other computer I can get 50.6 connections again? What a friendly modem. What is the reason behind this?

My other generic 56.6 modem connects at 50.6 every time, and never loses connection. My motorola SM56 only connects after a reboot, only connects at 38.8, and only stays connected AT MOST 1.5 hours. Same isp, same line, same everything.

To all, If you have a choice, don't get a SM56, it's a real hassle!

about the SM56....

i had the same problem at first, it wouldnt connect at faster then 44.0Kbps.
And yes if i am connected, then disconnect and reconnect, it will only get uptop a max of 46.6Kbps.

The modem is really screwed to put it nicely, but i connect @ 50.6 everytime first go, and have been for a solid year or so. I use a long extention cord but it dosnt reduce the quality or speed, i download @ around 5.7KB/S on average and am with iPrimus Internet.
