SONY DDS SDT-S9000 DAT DRIVE

I used to use the Dat Drive on a draco machine I am know trying to contect to a Windows 98 machine. The SCSI card regonises the device but I am unabe to get windows to acknowledge the drive. I looked at the sony site and they recommend updating the firmware, but if I update the firmware will the old machine still recognize the drive. Any ideas
