ATI Race IIc on emachines motherboard

I was helping a friend set up the new NASCAR 3 game and after installing DirectX 6 (required by the game), the game graphics looked real bad.

We went to ATI and downloaded the latest ATI Rage IIc drivers but now he only gets VGA graphics.

Help!

The same thing happened to me with Need 4 Speed High stakes I had to reinstall Windows 98 into new directoru and after that reinstall newest drivers. It did help (the windows resolutions and colors) but within a game if I chose some higher resolution the game craks....
