Angry PCI 56k Modem / Plug n Pray

I unfortunately own a Compaq Presario 5204.

I had the disk partitioned to run Linux and NT.

Over the weekend I formatted the drive and installed 98. PnP picked up the video card, monitor, scanner, printer with no problems. However, it does not correctly find the PCI 56k modem.

I downloaded the correct driver. When I start Windows, it 'finds' the modem, calling it a "PCI Serial Card". I've tried to install both the custom driver from Compaq as well as the generic 56k modem driver.

Windows tells me that the modem driver is not intended for this device.

Basically, I've tried all kinds of things. The error I'm getting when I try and use the modem is 630.

-- What am I missing here? Is there some kind of driver for a "PCI Serial Card" that I need to install first, before installing/configuring the modem?

Thanks.

Unfortunatly compaq uses at least 3 different Lucent v90 modems. Each has there own part number and work on different models. I am not at work, so I don't know the spare part number of the modem you have.

HOWEVER the most common one does not have drivers avalible as a softpaq, and generic Lucent drivers don't work. You will need the drivers off the restore CD. If you have a spare hard drive, run the restore on it, and take the lucent files, and INF files out of it, and put it on the other system. Remember to delete the 2 .bin files in the INF directory so it will recreate the index and driver information.

I know of no other real option.
