Angry Compaq Presario CDS 660 crashed ... need CD-ROM driver help!

I have a Compaq Presario CDS 660 computer; old, yes. I received it as a gift, and I just cannot afford to get a new computer at this time.

Here's my situation: on Saturday, when I returned home from work, I tried to get online (I leave my computer up & running all day). When the program did not respond, I did CONTROL-ALT-DELETE. I was told that my system's resources were dangerously low (or something to that effect). So I started to close all open programs to reboot.

When I went to the Start Menu to restart the computer, I kept getting the same "dangerously low" message. When I tried using CONTROL-ALT-DELETE to reboot, I received the same error message. I had no choice but to turn off the computer.

When I turned it back on, I was informed that the operating system was missing.

Again, since I have a computer that was owned by someone else, I did not have any utility disks available. I tried to use some from work, and managed to get DOS back. I followed advice from another party to make a Windows 95 start-up disk. Thus, I am able to get as far as the Windows 95 screen.

It then jumps to a C-Prompt and tells me that it cannot find the CD-ROM drive. I have a CR-503CBQ (think that's it) CD-ROM drive ... I found drivers online to download, but none of them have an automatic system program on them so that when I put the disk in the computer @ the start-up I don't get the disk error message.

I absolutely, positively don't know DOS. Thus, I have no clue how to load the drivers so that I can access my CD-ROM drive & install Windows 95 again.

Is there anyone out there who can help me out? Remember, I'm computer illiterate when it comes to DOS & when it comes to messing around with the system itself.

Any and all help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
