I have been through a number of things trying to get the sound back on my Aptiva after upgrading to Win98 - even uninstalling - for some reason in Win98 it creates 4 unknown devices (all relating to sound) no help from IBM and 6 hours with Microsoft - still no solution to my problem .. perhaps this computer has just become a large paperweight?? any ideas to resolve? pparent@tscinc.com thanks for your time and efforts

Hi,
I installed Win98 and got the same problems as you describe. Ok....Since Im living in Sweden I use Swedish Win98 and therefore my translation of all the language-specific things (like buttons and such stuff) is LOUSY....but hey...I dont charge anyone for it so... ![]() What you'll need: One of the two CDs that came with your aptiva (the blue, Test- and Helpprograms). and the updated drivers from the IBM PC Support site, the one for Internet Explorer 4, DirectX5 and Crystal Drivers. I will only describe how I made it because its like 07:16 in morning and Im to tired to explain step by step in detail... When Win98 asked for the driver for two newly found devices I pointed both at the blue-cdrom directory (called old crystal drivers from now on) and at the directory where I put the new crystal drivers. Win98 found two devices and installed them, restarted...and no sound... I couldnt figure it out....til I reinstalled Win98...stopped the install-process when win98 found my soundcard and then executed the "UNSETUP.EXE" which did something to my Win98 and restarted. Now Win98 found my soundcard and WOW! Sound was working. Now, since I know those drivers are old I wanted to upgrade to the new ones. Just select Properties on each device in system (system=when you select Properties on My Computer) and choose Drivers, then click on the "Upgrade drivers"-button....point Win98 to the New Crystal Drivers directory... Good luck! |
