I installed a computer at a local business here. Everything works except the modem because it needs to select a line before it dials the ISP. On the phone the lady just hits the "line 1 or 2" button and she gets an outside dialtone.
How do I tell the modem to do the same? It is a US Robotics...

There is an option in the modem properties that says "Dial X to get an outside line" Just put 1 or two in it so that it will dial that number before the number to the ISP.
thanks for the reply, but I don't think it quite works like that. When we dial 9 it is part of number to dial out..... but when we hit the "line 1" labeled button what number is it entering?

Are you trying to connect your modem to a digital phone system? I think you're better off hooking it up into a dedicated line if that is the case.
You can use the digital phone line as long as the phone line going to the modem comes from the back of the phone. This port is made to emulate the analogue line and I use one all the time at work. In my case I need to dial a 9. If you do not have a port in the back of the phone and you are trying to connect to the actual port in the wall you will have no luck. Modems work over analogue lines and can not talk over a digital line.
To put the 1 or 2 in under dial properties:
Open the dial up connection to the connect to window and press the dial properties button and there is an option to put in a # to be used before dialing out.
I just saw your explanation of what you are asking. I don't think you can do what you want the way you want. It's the way I and GG noted above or nothing from what I've seen.
Yes. They are right. You can't do that. The modem needs a dedicated phone line in your case. :cool:
