[RESOLVED] HERES A CHALLENGE FOR HE TRUE WIZARD

Hi

I'm running server 2000 on my PC(PIII 500mmHz, 128MB SDRAM, Asus V6600 GeForce 256, SB Live Digital, Asus 440BX Flagship Motherboard P3B-F). My problem lies in the gaming department and basically just operating sstem compatability. In the first few minutes of gameplay my PC will totally lock up and loop the sound like a skipping CD, the system becomes totally non-functionable causing me to reboot. Since I built this machine up as a gaming machine you can probably understand my frusterations.

I have tried numerous display and sound drivers, have changed settings in the bios, even removed the soundcard from the motherboard , nothing works.
I understand that win2000 server is not a gaming operating system but i know several people that have the system running flawlessly with games and all.

I've tried all the drivers I can think of

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

We seem to be finding out more and more that some devices just aren't Win2000 compatible...plus, some "games" aren't compatible with all sound cards.
I know this doesn't help you out much but it might explain the screwy performance of your "game."

I recommend getting a 300 W unit
Since the GeForce 256 is known to use alot of power ,well you could try it or just wait here for some more info .

And looping sound is often an IRQ conflict.

You're running Win2k server on 128 meg of memory? And then trying to play games? Win2k server practically requires 128 meg of its own just to boot! https://forums.windrivers.com/

Anyway, from the sound of it, your soundcard may not have anything to do with it. Sound skipping/looping is often a side effect of any crash, whether or not related to the soundcard and its drivers. I've had many a pc lock up, and still continue to play the cd soundtrack, flawlessly, until I actually power off the machine. I would take a closer inspection of the cooling system, both of the CPU and GPU.

Another thing I would check is bios settings, see if you are running "Optimal" or "Normal" mode, sometimes this makes a difference, also check your AGP strength, and aperature size (move from 64 megs to 128). Often a smnall change in teh bios will make all the difference with lockups invloving running semi-intense games/applications. (In my humble experience)

If you built it for gaming, I would use a different OS also. Go with 98SE or ME, 2000 (especially server!) is not a very multimedia and gamer-oriented OS!

Well I am not gonna say anything new but trying to play games win Win2000?No way!
I would suggest Win98 or if you are a maniac with new operating systems Windows M.E.
Take it from a fellow spider the only reson I haven't installed them (and believe me I AM a "new edition" freak) is that I'll have problems with the few games I play when I find time!

Uh...where do you get that idea? Win2000 jhappens to be pretty decent for gaming...I use it myself wiht no trouble whatsiever. You just have to have a beefy enough setup (Like an 800+, and 256 MB of RAM). THing is, PROFESSIONAL is the one for this use.....forGET 2K server. That OS is optimized for running multiple apps in the background anyway...not for user-input stuff.

And, just out of curiousity, which games have you actually gotten RUNNING on Windows ME? That thing has got so many compatibility problems it's sad!

Just dual-boot the thing if you're really hung on 2000 server and can't get rid of it. Slap a small 1-2 GB or so partition on their and toss 98 SE in their so you can be and happy and play. Besides, what would puters be without games....uggg
