[RESOLVED] I can't display 256 colors

I just had to reinstall windows 98, when I did I set me at 16 colors now everything looks real crappy. I opened up my computer and I think I have a SIS video chip. How can I get my computer to display 256 colors again? It didn't install the right driver, I don't guess. I've tried going to settings and display and changing the colors there, but when I restart my computer it says my display or something is setup wrong. I downloaded something off this site for my SIS chip thing but whenever I run it and restart my computer I get a fatal exception error. Can anybody help me with this, I am stuck? Thanks alot

Windows98 will automatically set the settings to 16 Colors whenever it does not detect the video adapter (whether you don't have the driver, or you have installed it incorrectly) as a safety precaution. Go into Device Manager and remove the driver (IF it is not Microsoft's generic driver), the computer should then state that it requires a reboot for the changes to take effect. Permit it to reboot. PROVIDED you have the correct driver for your video chip and you just installed it incorrectly the first time round, Windows98 will install it for you after the reboot and will ask you again to reboot. Permit it to do so. If Windows98 does NOT do this, you will be required to correctly identify your display adapter (chip or card). You should identify the correct video chip/card regardless. All SiS video chips that I have encountered had SiS printed right on the chip and included model number as well. If you are not sure, copy all letters and numbers on the chip and match it with corresponding identification in the SiS website. CIAO!
