Anyone ever had their cd-rom drive just disappear from windows? I have a machine that is running Win98, everything is running just fine but Windows does not recognize that there is a Cd-Rom drive. Yet, I can jump into a DOS window and look at the CD just fine.
Other than formatting and starting all over ... I am at a loss.
Any help would be appreciated.

Check your hard disk contollers in windows device manager and see if you have any problems there.

Device manager sees everything just fine, ... yet Windows, itself does not.

Have you checked under performance to see if your running in 16bit compatipility mode ?

Yes, and no it is not. Like I said, its running as close to normal as it can. Except for this one thing.

Run an anti-virus program on it.. I've had this happen several time and that's what caused it.

when this has happend to me i first run the add hard ware wizard( sometimes it works) or i take the rem out of the autoexec.bat file for the cdrom, boot it up once then rem the cdrom line back out and reboot and it stays there.
Tried all those great suggestions, nada. CD-Rom is now master, HD is slave. Still no CD shown, although the device is there. Nothing in the autoexec.bat or anything else... whacky I tell ya.
Have you somehow gone into the driver properties and clicked the "Hidden" attribute or the "Do not show this drive in Windows" check box that you can click on harddrives? you may check it out..
As it seems to me from Your last post , You used CDROM and HDD both on same IDE channel.

So, try to use CDROM and HDD on separated IDE
channels (HDD -1, CDROM-2).
Ok, try this...it's worked for me plenty of times.
Go to your Config.sys file and open it as a text file in order to add the following line:
LASTDRIVE=Z
Thats it. You can add this line in anywhere and it will work. This allows Win9x to see all the drives you have installed. Hey, sometimes the old way still is the best way! Good luck.
Agree with NightVa - sometimes it's helps me too.
During installation Win9x always REMmed this.
But it's usefull thing in case if You using multyconfig with DOS networking,DOS CDROM etc.
There are two hard drives in the system, a ZIP internal, and the cd-rom. All of which have worked fine up until recently when the Cd-Rom disappeared. Whacky.
So I cannot just run the HDD-1, Cd-Rom-2. And the lastdrive statement is in ...

Have you got windows cabs files on your hard disk? Try re-installing windows without re-formatting
