fatal exception error

hello,

I have a slight problem. Every time my computer starts up it gives a fatal exception error just before it loads windows. The latest one is "fatal exception error 0D at 0A9B:00000218". These errors actually starting occuring when I tried to install an hp cd-writer. I never installed any software or anything, just the writer. I've tried a lot of things to hopefully remedy the situation, but I haven't yet succeeded. I removed the cd-writer but the errors still continue. I've tried using selective start-up under msconfig.exe to try multiple boot options. I've also tried using the system file checker and the registry checker included with windows, but neither of these have worked even though file checker discovered that my setupx.dll file was corrupted, but I replaced it. Also, I ran scandisk to check for any errors but that didn't work. The latest thing I've tried was messing with the RAM a bit that was a useless endeavor. If anyone has any idea what might be causing this give me a holla!!

How long did the system run in a stable condition? From you post I'm assuming that you did not install any software on it, just a burner? Mayber the install you did of windows was from a bad disk, or maybe the mobo is flaky. Other then that, I dunno.

Another couple of things for anyone who wants to know. The computer runs fine in safe mode and if I put the old cd-writer in that was replaced by the new one it still gives me the errors.

Try searching the Microsoft Searchable Knowledge BAse.

You may have to end up formatting and reinstalling. Carn you burn a CD in safemode? I have no idea. If you can, I'd just back up any files I need to CD, then do a format and reinstall windows. Hopefully this will save you the headache and a lot of time.

try this;

Boot in DOS mode
CD windows

Attrib -r -s -h system.dat
Attrib -r -s -h system.da0(zero not O)
attrib -r -s -h user.dat
attrib -r -s -h user.da0 (zero)

copy system.dat *.(todays date i.e. *.730)
copy user.dat *.730

copy system.da0 system.dat
copy user.da0 system.dat

Reboot your system, this should set everything back to before you started having problems. If you can not find the .da0 files let me know. As everything in Microsoft there are six ways to do everything.
