What happens during...
Could anyone tell me what exactly happens whenever the Add New Hardware wizard is acitivated. The hard drive has activity and a progress bar is shown, but what happens in the background? Plug and Play is self explanatory but what about non-Plug and Play?
Every answer is welcome.

According to MS, the add hardware wiz reads the ACPI table, looking for IRQ's and/or mem addresses that weren't previously there, and/or have changed since the last successful boot.

Plus attempts to read the BIOS of the device comparing all the info it gets to the signatures in all the .inf files in the INF folder of Windows. If it finds a match, it installs the appropriate driver, if not, it states 'unknown device' and asks for driver disk.
