I'm installing a new hard drive on an old computer that doesn't have a CD-ROM drive. So, I'm putting Win 95 on it because that's the only floppy we have on disks. Right after the license agreement box appears and I click ok on it, another box comes up saying:
SUWIN
An error has occurred in your application.
Choose Ignore...
Choose Cancel...
If I chose Ignore the box just pops back up, and if I chose cancel the computer goes back to DOS. Anyone have a clue what this means? :mad:
Could be a virus or maybe a previous installation of Windows? But you say it's a new HD so I'd start with getting those floppies checked. Also, would it be possible to just temporarily connect a CDROM, copy the Windows CD to the HardDrive, and then install from the HD?
Well I've tried two different sets of install disks, and I had just used one of those sets yesterday and it worked fine. :confused: I'll try installing a CD-ROM... I'll let you know how it turns out...
Wow, I just remembered also there was a recall on the Win95 floppies once. There was some bad code on, I think, disk #2 and the install definitely wouldn't work? Does this ring a bell for anyone else?
That's funny.... The License Agreement is at the end of disk #2!!!! :rolleyes:
OK here's an update... Before I messed with a CD-ROM I thought I'd try the floppies one more time. This time I got an error box with the message:
SUWIN caused a general protectoin fult in module SUWIN.EXE at 0008:15FA
I installed an external CD-ROM and tried to install Win 95. I got the same error. I then did "copy d:*.* c:setup" to copy the cd to the hard drive, but that didn't work. Only three files were copied, and even though setup was one of them it wouldn't run. I figured that I didn't correctly copy the cd, but that's the only way I know how.
Make sure you have Xcopy on your boot floppy with CD support and from the a: type Xcopy d:\win95\*.* c:\win95 you will be asked is c:\win95 a file or directory, answer directory and let it run. When complete just go into the c:\win95 directory and run setup.exe
OK... I didn't have xcopy on a floppy so I copied it from one machine onto a disk and tried running it on the computer. It stated that it couldn't run in DOS. I remembered you saying something about a virus so I checked the hard drive setup disk that came with the hard drive, but it came up clean. I'm about ready to just put the old hard drive back in and worry about this later. My boss thinks that maybe the BIOS needs to be updated, but I have never updated a BIOS before. Could this be causing this problem or is my boss just out there? I don't think the BIOS would do this because the computer whose hard drive I switched out yesterday is the exact same, and I seriously doubt anyone updated the BIOS on one computer and not the other one. The computer is a Compaq Prolinea 5100. I don't know the model number nor do I know where to look on the motherboard for the info that I would need to find out if there is a BIOS update. Any help is greatly appreciated....
Just a quick note: Xcopy.exe should not be having any problems running in DOS, it's a DOS app. Check that boot floppy for a virus too.

Sowulo, yes, I remember the disk2 issue back from the 95A 3.5" diskette days....I used to hate sitting there flipping all those disks!
Also, SUWIN errors can come from improperly jumpered processors!!!
I just tried the hard drive in another computer which is the same model/type, and the same error came up. I think that the one computer that the install worked on Monday has had some modification on it that the other two don't have. I'm really dreading messing with the BIOS to get this to work. The webpage MUFIUC refered me to suggested this.
Just a thought, but it sounds like the setup disk for the drive is some sort of boot manager. Win95/98 does not like BMs, try removing the boot manager, fdiskthe drive and then format. Then try installing windows!! :D
I've had trouble installing 95 and 98 before when Virus checking options in the BIOS are on. It's probably not the problem, but it has saved me before. I can't remember the exact name of the option, but if there is an option for virus warnings, or checking in the BIOS, turn it off.
I was finally able to work on the computer again. Don't ask me why, but now everything works!!! I started to disable EZ-BIOS and start the computer using the boot disk that came with the install disks, but then I thought I'd try the boot disk before disabling EZ-BIOS. Before I was letting the computer boot to DOS on its own and then trying to install WIN95 using the first setup disk. When I booted off the boot disk, it said that the hard drive needed to be configured for Windows. Before I think it said something to the effect that an OS was already installed and to use the first setup disk. Oh well it's working now so I could care less how I "fixed" it. Thanks to everyone for the help.
