hey all...i posted this one before and to no avail, that everything i tried did not seem to work...I have a windows protection error, during boot up of windows 95b, it occurs late in the boot up process, during windows drivers, because i can get into safe mode...any ideas as to what could be causing this...i have office 2000 running partly off ofa network...visual studio 6 and pagemaker 6.5
I used to have this problem when my hard drive stopped responding for a couple of secs and then I had to switch my computer off and start again.
There are a number of solutions:
a)Press F8 at the starting Windows 95... bit
and when the windows 95 bootup menu appears select to start with comand prompt only. When you see a C:>_ type scanreg. This will scan the registry and report any errors. You can also restore the registry from a previous backup.
b)Have you tried formatting your HD and then reinstalling windows all over again? this ill clear all of the files on your HD so make sure you back up any important files.
c)The last thing you could do is upgrade your windows version to 98 or ME or simply go out and seek epert help!

Since it starts in safe mode it is probably not Windows causing the error. Have you done a search of MS knowledge base? I found over 100 results for 95 protection error. I depends on your hardware and your software as to the possible solution. A network card was listed several times.
If that doesn't work you can boot to safe mode and remove programs till you find the offending one. If you remove all and it still won't start I suggest a format and clean install.
Again, please post system info for better answers. Sometimes it is hardware specific and we need to know the specs.

It is most likely a driver problem. A quick way to get rid of all of your drivers, run regedit in safe mode, go to hkey local machine, then delete the key "enum", reboot, windows should reinstall all the drivers, and you can watch and take note of the last drivers installed before the problem comes back. Good luck.

do you have a umax scanner?
In many instances a umax scanner was causing the error. If it is a problem with a Umax scanner, messing with the registry will not help (it's in the system.ini). There is a fix on their site.
Also, if you have an AMD processor that is 300MHz or faster, have you applied the patch?

ya, do you have the amd pros?
pIII 600 with 32 megs of ram...matrox g200 16 meg vid and an ess 220 sound card and netelligent 10/100 nic..i think the mobo is proprietary to compaq...these computers are all deskpro en's from compaq..we have about 200 of em around the campus in labs...most are pIII's some have ati rage pro vid card with 64 megs of ram and intel pro managment 10/100 nics...in the process of trying to get everything standardized but that takes money

Your network install of office may have become corrupted, or your computer is trying to load something off the network before the NIC has been enumerated and/or initialized. You may have to boot in safe mode and remove any office components from the startup group and edit the registry for any run, run once or run services values related to office..

Just a quick comment, although I haven't review all of these comments, I had a similar problem after installing IE 4+ on a computer running win95, it turned out to be the NIC drivers were corrupted for some reason. I would suggest checking for this by reinstalling your NIC drivers, then continuing. Anyway, it shouldn't hurt to try it, if it works, all the more power to you.

This windows protection error....does it state anything about a vmm32.vxd? If so do you have a UMAX Scanner? If so there is a fix for this in the form of an updated vmm32.vxd Email me and I will let you have it.
