Doing a OEM install on 3gb drive, test machine in home network. Boot from win98 boot disk, cd-rom support, select install win98 and goes to cd rom drive, and stops. I can run an NT install fine, cd rom is fine. I can plug another drive in and all works properly. Have made a new bootdisk, same problem. Any ideas?
Try this:
Boot from W98 Boot Disk and select to startup with CD-ROM support. Then point the path to the CD-ROM, type setup and press enter.
It should work.

I have booted from boot disk, switched to CDROM and typed setup , starts to run and fails back to CD Rom prompt. I have tried format /s , copied the win98 cabs to c: and tried setup from there. This very frustrating. I can load any NT OS that I want on drive.Quote:

If this is an OEM version of 98 it may not work. I have read that some versions will only work w/ specific hard drives or systems. Sometimes the OEM does not supply a true full version of Windows to help prevent fraud.
Is the NT OEM?

bb, you said you could install nt on it...is the drive still ntfs or did you fdisk and format to fat 16/32?
if it is fat 16/32, i would suspect the cd may be scratched or dirty... I have also seen some cd-rom drives that work ok with some cd-rom's but not with others becasue the cd rom dirve is defective and cannot access certain parts of the cd.
A buddy of mine purchased a HP whatever. It came w/ OEM win98. We tried to load it on another computer w/ no avail. Come to find out that it would only work w/ the hard drive that was in the HP.
M$ way to prevent fraud. It is an image of the hard drive I believe so you can still reload the image if you crash.
Dell was doing this too. I know they were getting **** for it.
Also: boot98 boot disk, fdisk the drive (i mean clear the whole thing and create a new partition. I will not matter if you use fat32, actually, I might suggest that and create one big partition. Reboot w/ the boot disk. Format c: . You should be good to go.

Are you getting any error messages? If so can you please detail them out? What settings are you using within IDE? What is H/D setup as (Primary/secondary master or Primary/secondary slave) and the same for CDRom. I had similar problems with my PC. I formatted the h/d using DOS Disc 1. Format using FAT16. Select the biggest size for the partition which is around 2048 MB. Install DOS. Then install CDRom drivers for DOS. Restart PC in DOS. This should correctly detect your CDRom Drive. Try to run Win98 install. This worked for me. I hope it works for you too. Good Luck!!!
ok... now this i have heard of.... but the only time to worry about this is if you do not have the actual windows oem cd, this only applies to those stupid POS companies and their restore cd....Quote:

Drive is fully loaded and operating. I flashed the BIOS and loaded a utility from the Seagate site, EZ DRIVE, provides a low level format, ran the install and worked great. I feel that the problem was this system is in a home lab and has had about every OS that there is. This was very frustrating as I am a database consultant as well as MCSE and have seen about everything that clients can do to a system.
