Win98 restart
Anyone have any ideas why a new install of 98SE on new hardware would start not being able to do a restart from windows. Just hangs on the splash screen informing you windows is shutting down. Restart the computer and you do not get a scan disk, so it does finish shutting down but just not resetting. Also a straight shutdown gives no problems. System specs are
Celeron 400
32 megs
8.4 gig Fujitsu
Alton 748 mobo with integrated sound, video, modem and 100baseT (bleh. I just build the parts that are handed to me so please no comments from the gallery)
Have a feeling it is the net card, but just wanting to see if anyone else has an idea.

take the network card out & see if it shuts down then or connect it to a network as this can stop this prob also

good luck your software warranty has expired you may be lucky to to acquire everything back on a complete install, however those who know will tell you to disable the feature and keep chugging

What? Uh-huh.
Anyway Darren, it was an intergrated net card. But just disabled it in device manager and everything is great. Thanks for the info.

You guys saved the day! I just installed 4 of those same mobo's and got the SAME re-start problems. Will give the network thing a try in the morn.
