How serious a problem is Y2K for a home computer that is several years old, running WIN 95? Do you think it could cause the OS to shutdown? If it is a problem, what should be done? Thanks.

If your system's BIOS can't rollover between 1999 and 2000, then you have a major problem.
How you can test it? Do something simple:
Bootup and change the time to 23:55 and the date to 12-31-99. Powerdown and wait for until 5-7 minutes. Then bootup again and check the time and the date. Is it 00:01, 01-01-00? If so, it's ok. If not, I'm afraid you have to find a way to upgrade your BIOS.
You must worry for the BIOS first and then for your Operating System.
I hope these helped you a bit...
