If you are going to do it then buy the full version not the upgrade. I have seen & heard of too many problems when the upgrade is used.
If your system is less than a year old then I would say go for it, but if it older then I would stick to Win98SE.

Personally, If I were unsure I would buy the 50 dollar upgrade and do a full install with it I just did this weekend and works great, it just asks for your 98 cd during install, but doesnt copy anything from it.
ya i usally to clean installs, and use upgrades, the 98 does the same thing, just asks for a 95 disc, i also keep 3.1 floppys for the same thing
stick with 98se.
thanks crazy, anyone else?
Stick with 98 if you run a lot of different apps. The few computers we have had with ME come through needed at least 2 software upgrades for different apps. I've also heard of some problems with internet apps.
So far though with the exception of having to upgrade some software apps no problems. Runs ok, but I still prefer 98.

The box said "Requires Windows 95 or better" so I installed Linux
WHy not just download explorer 5.5 and media player 7, that's about the only difference I've noticed on ME.
is the 5.5 still at beta?, i had herd it was buggy? is it?i think i may just stay with the 98, i just figgured it (me) would have better support with all the chips, and video cards etc
FYI- Norton Anivirus 2000 cannot do start up scans(maybe because there is no real autoexec.bat) so be aware you may have to upgrade your software to make it work ok if you go ME.
The full version is the upgrade version.Quote:

for example: With products such as office '95/97/2000 the only difference is the registration key tells the CD which version was purchased.
You can use an upgrade version to do a clean full install... first format the drive, then run the ME upgrade. it will look for a previous copy of windows, just pop in your 98 CD for the verification then switch back to the me cd... whalla a fresh full version install. without all the aggravation of the upgrade getting buggy from the previous OS.
clean installs are generally better than overwriting an older OS with the newer one.
I have ME running now and it is OK as long as your computer is fairly new
I have found a couple of little bugs but I think it was due to using Norton sys works 2000, you need Norton sys works 2001 to run properly under ME
It has more support for newer hard ware, and since you have Win 98 you can buy the promo step up for half the price of the ME upgrade and still do a clean install
Me does boot quicker and they have dropped the DOS stuff, it should still support DOS apps

My point was, not to upgrade your exisiting installation. Bit like Win95 or 98 upgrade???? Now why did the OEM full versions always seem much more stable even if the upgrade was used as a full version????? https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/

Guys, I've had a LOT of customers complaining about ME....to the point where I'm considering just buying every comy of 98se I can get my hands on instead. DOS apps...WIndows apps....lots of games....lots of printers and scanners.....they either won't work right or won't work at all. And the manufacturers are blaming Microsoft (who, in return, is blaming the manufacturers.) Now, I'm not saying it's not improved...it IS more stable. But for pete's sake, before you go buy it, CHECK ON [/b]ALL[/b] OF YOUR HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE FIRST!!!!! MAKE [/b]ABSOLUTELY[/b] SURE IT WILL WORK!!!

Orion1998_1,
For the love of God man don't buy it!!!!!!
If you really hate yourself that much consider getting a support group to help with your self abuse issues.
I see it like this;
Customer: I would like to buy a pointy stick.
Clerk: Here’s your stick, that’ll be 129.99, unless you had jagged stick then it’s only 89.99, and if you have sharp stick its only 49.99 !!!!
Customer: *runs home with new stick*
Customer: *Pokes stick in eye* OWW! *Pokes stick in eye* OWW! *Pokes stick in eye* OWW! *Pokes stick in eye* OWW! *Pokes stick in eye* OWW! *Pokes stick in eye* OWW!
3 weeks later…..
Customer : *Pokes stick in eye* Hey it doesn’t hurt anymore !!!!!!
That more or less my experience with Windows ME.
