I'm having trouble installing an HP printer in win 98. Everytime I go through the wizard it ends with "program has done an illegal operation" and dumps. The printer is an expensive one (can't remember the model) and it used to run fine under ME the other day. I had to do a reinstall (hah) just to get someone by for two weeks until I can mess with the box again and now this shows up. Any ideas? Sorry I'm not being very specific, let me know what you need to know. Thanks.
Is it a parallel or a USB one?
Might sound obvious, but download the latest drivers from HP for your particular model.

Good Idea!!! Go here for <a href="http://www.hp.com/cposupport/software.html" target="_blank">HP's Drivers & Downloads</a>. You will need your model number for this...
It's parallel and I already downloaded the latest drivers. Thank you, though. Any more ideas? I might just have to reinstall win98 AGAIN!
Try setting the parallel port in the BIOS to ECP+EPP........

How do things look in Device Manager? Any exclamation marks or other errors?
You never did say which printer model it is...which one is it?
You might try deleting that printer completely and then reload using the drivers that came with Win98...then try the updated drivers from HP. It really shouldn't be this difficult unless there is a hardware problem somewhere. Do you have the proper bi-directional parallel cable installed?
Just a couple of suggestions...let us know how it goes...
You also might try to remove the printer and the printer/parallel ports, restart and let windows find the ports, restart again, and then set up your printer. I have found that sometimes they become corrupt(?) for no reason what so ever.
Complete uninstall of the sfotware.
Disconnect the printer from the PC.
Boot into safe mode.
Delete all parallel ports, and any printers that still might be in the device manager.
Get rid of it also in registry (if you know how to do that).
Boot into normal mode, let the PC reconize the parallel ports.
Reboot.
Connect the printer, and reinstall the newest drivers for it.
If that doesn't work, try a similar model drivers.
(I.e. if its a 722, try 720, if its an 832, try 812...)
