Craziest thing you've ever done?

This storm that just rolled through the Northeast Area dumped a foot of snow in my backyard. Through all the precautions we were receiving before the storm hit it got a few of us Techies here thinking about taking on the storm. We got out the Hiking equipment and snow shoes and hit the mountain's of Harriman NY (Bear Mountain area) by 10:00am we got there and hit the trail. By the time we got to the top of the mountain (around 11:15am) there was at least 18 inches of fluffy virgin snow, visability was about 25 feet and the snow was moving Horizontal. Well we hid behind a huge boulder to block the wipping snow and preceded to pound some brandy and relax a bit (half hour or so). When we decided to start heading back the wind was at our face and our tracks were already covered. The snow was coming down at 3in per/hour. One of the guys kept trecking on while three of us hung back for a minute so one guy could adjust his face mask and when we turned around we couldn't find the other guy. We started to call out for him and because we were so bundled up he couldn't hear us. We started to run around and couldn't find the trail markers because of the snow sticking to the trees. After about 10 minutes of screaming we heard him reply and we ended up finding him. As we decended down the mountain the wind wasn't as bad and visability got better but the snow was now at about 2ft. deep and our legs were getting tired. We just paced ourselves and managed to find our way with the compass and trail map. It was a bit scary . https://forums.windrivers.com/ for a little while but we all made it out fine. This has to be one of the craziest things I have done except for skydiving. How about everyone else??? Got some crazy stories....Let's hear it.

When I was moving into my new house last summer, I found a HUGE wasps' nest in the kitchen, which was very much active. I didn't want to call an exterminator, and I knew there wasn't enough RAID in town to kill the little bastards, so I got out my 12 guage, loaded up some shells, and opened fire. After about a half a dozen shots, I got most of them, and finished them off with some flying insect killer. All of this was within city limits, BTW. A buddy talked me into tring Hang Gliding while I was in the Navy, since I had already done SkyDiving it wasn't that hard to talk me into it. What he didn't tell me was there was no QUALIFIED instructor. Steve had only done it a few times himself, and it was just me and him. So we drove to this 400 ft cliff he new of and set up the gliders. Then he shows me the basics of the controls, "push forward to go up, pull back to go down, slide left togo left, etc." Meanwhile I'm waiting for the instructor to show up (non-existant) finaly he rigs up and says " Now, this is easy just run off the cliff and push the bar forward and you are on on your way. And away he went. Off soaring into the sky.

So, I mustered my nerve yelled "God save the Queen" and ran full bore for the edge of the cliff with the bar pushed forward ....


And promptly fell 350 feet before the updraft caught me and turned the nose of this silk covered pixie stick contraption back toward "up" (screaming like a 5 yrold boy that sat down on the plunger someone left in the toilet)


Once down on the ground again (as soon as managable) I swore I would never do that again and have so far lived up to my vow.

Personaly once I cleaned the pile of sh*t out of my underpants https://forums.windrivers.com/ I would have beaten the everlovin' sh*t out of him. That is nut's. Seems like he was trying to kill you. I would do it tandem first before jumping off the cliff. I have gone skydiving, bungie jumping and even cliff diving but I have always gone with professional instruction first. I hike the mountains in Harriman at least 2 dozen times a year and I know the trails well but I still go with trail maps and a compass and keep light sticks, an emergency blanket, small air horn and first aid kit with me as well as more than enough powerbars and water for a few days if needed. One thing I have learned in life is to be prepaired, I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I would say walking through Harlem from about 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. during my "illegitimate days." Of course I was up to no good besides.

The craziest thing I have done is rode my mountain bike 50+mph down Mt. Snow in Vermont during the summer. THATS SERIOUSLY NUTS!! Especially when you don't even have to pedal, just let gravity take care it! (Thankfully I have only had one serious crash in 3yrs doing it)

The most unbelievable thing I have done (and possibly the most embarrising) is falling down a set of stairs at work and twisting both of my ankles!! That sucked, totally swollen and my feet were completely black, blue, green and yellow. (Yuck!)

When I was 16 my family went up to Quebec province (we live in South Jersey), and there was this canyon in New Hampshire on the way back. Now, when I was 9 I was almost killed at that canyon when I was swimming upstream and the river current almost pulled me over a 100 ft. waterfall. Not one to learn my lesson, I "lost" my family and went down the path to a place that was blocked off. Not to be turned away, I went over the blockade and proceded to climb (without gear, in jeans for crying out loud!) down this 150 foot cliff to the river below, then climb back up. Almost fell off when I was near the top. The thought that passed through my mind: "If I fall and die, it may be months, even years, before anyone finds my body." Well, duhh, that's why I never climb alone anymore. Still, I lived to tell the tale. My parents were frantic, and when I got back their fear turned to rage when they saw my torn up clothes, hands, and face. It's a wonder they survived my teenage years at all. It's also no wonder that, from the time I was 5 to the time I was 13, they used to keep my medical records on the desk at the Emergency Room, in case I happened to break something that day. It's a wonder my parents were never investigated for abuse! LOL
