I'm contemplating an upgrade.
Right now, I have an ASUS P2B motherboard with a PII400, and 2X64MB PC-100 RAM.
I'm considering going with a Gigabyte GA-6VXE7+ motherboard, with a Celeron 533, and 1X128MB PC-133 RAM.
I have limited funds, so that's why I'm not going PIII. However, I think that doing that I'd be able to upgrade higher down the road.
Sound like a good deal, or should I pass it up?

For my money, I'd wait until you can afford the PIII. Especially with the 133 MHz FSB. It really makes a difference over the Celeron. The new ones with the un-removed L2 cache are much better than the old ones, but still not quite as burly as a real CPU. https://forums.windrivers.com/
Of course, if you can't wait, and you just need to go faster, then go ahead and do it now. The MB and stuff you're talking about sound good.
Oh yeah... RAM is really cheap now, so you might even want to look at going to 256 MB road. I'm running 512, and don't even have a swap file! Yay! https://forums.windrivers.com/

Can you even buy a 533 anymore? My primary source of parts doesn't sell anything slower than a 700. BTW, the 533 is only a 66fsb so if you do that don't bother with the PC133 RAM just use the PC100 you already have (unless you're going to 256Mb)Quote:

My reasoning for going with the PC-133 is for future upgrading on the system...so I could go to a PIII without worrying about the RAM that I have in there.

If you only have limited funds why are you going Intel. AMD is sooooooooo much cheaper (price wise). Just checked out our prices at work here, a 1g Athalon is $3 more expensive than a 800 mhz celeron

So, I see from price watch on the Windrivers home page that a Celeron 633 is $60 and AMD 650's are $46. A whole $14 difference while losing the option to put a faster PIII on the same motherboard later.....

I'm not much of an AMD fan, actually. I find that Intel runs smoother in what I do than AMD does. Personal opinion...same reason why I buy Chrysler and not Ford. https://forums.windrivers.com/Quote:

Beast, After being under the pentium thumb for MANY years, I finally bought an Athlon barebones for a grand total of 266.00. It came with an Athlon 750 with a dual fan/heatsink, ATX case, floppy drive, Biostar MB, and I chose the 64MB PC133 ram for about 20 bucks. I also had 64MB PC133 from the other board.
Results? I added the 10gb HDD and several parts from the dead PII 350 machine I had laying around. (ok, I admit I had the thing overclocked to 434 for 3 years on a pcchips board)but wow!! what a machine!! I have 12 computers in my little home network, and It beats the hell out of the PIII 700 at a WAAAAYYYYY lower cost. Spectacularly stable, and I play UT online for hours on end. Call me "surprisingly pleased"
