AMD makes one weak chip!
I have never been impressed with AMD performance since the old 486 days (yes I had an AMD DX2 80). Since then they have made improvements but I still count them as second-class chipmakers. The speed/performance/reliability has NEVER matched Intel. And Q: what type of chip needs "patches" to run software A: AMD. Once and for all AMD is an inferior chip, I have used them in new builds & upgrades and all of them have had problems. If you are too cheap to afford a real chip then DO NOT BUY A COMPUTER. I think Intel needs competition but the AMD is just a cheap knock off. Want performance buy a PIII Xeon, want headaches buy anything else (including AMD). My 2 cents

well I have used both Intel and AMDs of all types extensively for a long time now,
and I have to say I have had excellent experiences with both, however most people I do pc stuff for outside of work have no $ and opt for AMD because you get a lot more pc for a lot less $. I have 2 pcs with AMD K6-2s and 2 with intel now, and I love the K6-2s, they fly. I will be getting K7 as soon as I have the $, and the price comes down. I refuse to pay ridiculously high prices for any cpu. Maybe performance also depends how good you are at setting up and configuring windows properly too.....

OH?, Patches ya say? does celleron mean anything?

A chip is a chip is a chip. Intel is no better or worse than anyone else. In response to patches, are you so you young that you don't remember the 1st generations of pentiums? (no insult intended) https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2000/09/1.gif how quickly we all forget. AMD is now seriously challenging intel for perhaps the first time. The K6-2 line an up perform well, on a budget, and work wickedly well with voodoo accelerators which makes for a good budget gaming rig.
One last thing, if Intel is so good (which historically they have been, my MMX based 233 PI still runs well) why is there only a ~3% performance increase in the PIII over the PII (450Mhz) and a far wider price difference. Seems like kinda of a rip off to me. Too bad the PIIs are dead and we have to buy PIIIs to get 500+ Mhz. The PII was really good, not so with the PIII, lets wait until the K7 has been properly tested b4 we jump to conclusions.
Cheers,
GBJ

What if I said that intel makes one weak chip? Oh let's say I owned a P-166 and it crashed all the time (which it does). It doesn't mean that the PIII is going to crash all the time too. Oh one chip that I had was bad so ah, um, ah, well they all must be bad.
It's just not so.

I don't thin that AMD makes bad chips... Some of their older CPU's did have problems but the new stuff is ok... I use a batch of AMD K6-2's with 3dNOW and the worst problem I have had is keeping the blasted things cool.. Out of all the chips I prefer Intel.. The pentium 1's the P2's are Ok, but they are more unstable and you couldn't pay me to use a PIII

I dont think it is a question of a weak chip but a question of market dominance. If all the hardware manufacturers and software programmers are using your product because they perceive that this where the market is at then of course your chip will perform in a more stable manner than you competitor. As stated in other forums where there was a lot of bitching about patches all this proves is that AMD have yet to prove to the rest of the industry that they are here to stay and will retain a certain portion of the market. When I have a choice in the matter I try to steer my customers in the direction of Intel simply from a monetary point of view. I see less support calls and other issues from newbie computer users running Intel because that is what the software was written on and for. In price points AMD comes out a long way ahead with bang for your buck. As a techie I can say that but try explaining the importance of the cooling fan working on an K3 to someone who doesnt know what the BIOS is for and you will soon see my point.

Um, AMD needs patches? The only time that you would need a patch with an AMD CPU system is with win95. It was made so BECAUSE MS was sheisty and the end result would be an IOS (Or, the Linux ppl would know it as a 'kernel panic') error, because the AMD 350's and above were TOO FAST for the kernel to keep up.
As far as other patches, that is due to the actual mobo's and its chipset (e.g. ALi and VIA) because of MS and intel always being so close.
Oh, and as far as the "weak chip" opinion goes, have you, Tommyb, worked with K6-III's with AMD-approved boards? I know of many PC places that build crap AMD boxes so they can cut costs and make money. Try putting a K6-III on an ASUS P5A along with good memory and other quality parts, and you will see an intel killer at work.
So, before you start spouting off angry opinions about **CPU** manufacturer(s) and praise another, try to get rid of your bigetry towards the hated manuf, and get a better understanding of what you hate, before turning into another Tom Pabst

I sell Both Amd's and Petium Chips.
The performace of the chip depends on the motherboard you use, Assus Boards and DFI Boards Are The best board in my opion,
Its like when you build a house,
you want to build it on a solid Fondation
Instead of Quicksand

You know, I dont really mind loading patches -- if they're available. For the most part, chipset makers have been pretty good about staying current with their patches. A lot of game makers have been good too. What I dont like is needing a patch and not having it available. That sort of thing happens with every kind of hardware or software, so you kind of get used to it.

I have been selling AMD and Pentiums for two or three years now. i believe the AMD's Perform as well or better than AMD's When configued properly on a good mobo.
Most shops that offer sub $600 AMd boxes also use sub quality Motherboards.
Try ASUS P5a, Or Abit.
you will have much better luck.
BTW the only patches I have had to use were for Win 95a on a K6/2 350 &+

You are an arrogant, idiotic little *******. NO-ONE cares what YOU think. AMD is currently kicking Intel's ***, period!!

I have a K6-233 (about 2 yrs old now) and the only problem I've had was when I had too small a cooling fan/heat sink on it. These things run so much hotter than the Intel chips. Found out the hard way. But I installed an oversize fan and heat sink and all has run well.
