They bite.

I remember talking with a professor in college and he asked why I had a large Band-Aid on my hand. I told him that my computer bit me. (I had cut it on a cheap case.)

Since that time I've had a my share of dumb injuries. Last night was the worst. My wife asked me to do something, so I swung around in my chair and caught my naked toe in the open CD tray of my computer. It put an inch long bleeding gash in my big toe. It hurt like a MF'er! I'm surprised I didn't break the tray off the CDROM. My wife had a good laugh as I howled in pain.

I only mention it now because my toe is stuff throbbing a day later.

My previous most-painful-injury occurred when I took apart a "No Servicable Parts" power supply. We all know that those shock warnings are just dares. Anyway, I had forgotten about it and a few hours later I grabbed the piece of junk on the floor by it's wires and ZAP! It burnt a small hole in my finger. Ouchie!

I have had those days...sometimes a tech can be his/her own worse enemy.

I was mad and in a hurry one day (imagine that - a tech mad and being rushed) and was trying to get a bigfoot drive out of a cheap mini tower. It was wedged in tighter than hell. It came flying out after that last good pull.

Maybe I shouldv'e been wearing "cheap case gloves" or some other safety gear.

Still have a nice scar on my right knuckle.

Paint your old laptop!

Had another tech here a few months ago have to get minor surgery to repair his knuckle. He was tugging on an atx power connector on the motherboard, you know, the ones positioned right under the cheese grader side of the powersupply. I'll let you visualise what the other half of his knuckle looked like.

I have really done some damage before but whats even more fun is when one of your colleauges says i can't figure ths out can you take a look. As soon as both my hands touched the case to complete the circuit I discovered the problem. When the power supply had been put into the system a couple of screws had been dropped and so any other screw would do like this nice inch long one. Can we say hello to Mr. 110 once again.

I used to throw papers for some extra cash, well one night, i had to pee really bad, so i pulled onto a dark dirt road to take care of business. When i got out of my car, i slammed my finger in the door and broke it. the skin ruptured from the impact and pretty much turned the tip of my finger into sausage. anyways, true to form, i took a leak, broken finger throbbing, and a wet shoe(figure that one out!). i went to the emergency room, had my finger set, got some pain killers, then finished throwing the stupid papers.............

i've had stitches twice , and i use VERY good cases (you know , good folded edges , heavyduty steel, etc)

once , i was replacing a front panel switch (with the power plugged in of course{moron}) , and while i was placing it back into the case , i wnt through the sheilding and touched the 110v leads... while pulling out from fright , i got cut on the screw tab for the drive bay. 4 stitches...

another time , i was pulling one of the original celerons out of those original mounts (tight as h3ll) , and when it finall y slipped the card edge caught my other hand , and gave me another 4 stitch cut...

Managed to slice my right thumb open while installing a CD-ROM in a cheap-o case at a car dealership last year. It was a suprisingly deep cut, and even more suprising was the fact that I didn't notice it until I looked down and saw a small puddle of blood forming on the bottom of the case. https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2000/09/1.gif

I remember the first time we ever got a 3rd party service call to run. (Through one of those warranty companies, Cormac I think), Anyhow, I went out onsite all nervous to install a motherboard, I was nervous because they were paying us $50.00/hr. (at the time we charged $25.00/hr to our customers) to install this board at a very large company.

Anyhow, about 10 minutes into the install, (with the MIS person staring over my shoulder), I sliced my finger on the side of the case, getting blood all over the case, board, desk and chair until it was all said and done. Pretty embarassing!!!

Gee, and I thought you were called 3fingersalute for an entirely different reason...

I've cut myself a sveral times when trying to fix systems using cheap cases.
The worst was cutting my finger, last new-year's eve, when punched a monitor filter.
It broke (the filter only - thank God) and it cut me so bad that the scar is always there, on my finger, to remind me the last hours of the previous millenium!

I know I'd mentioned this before on a post awhile back...

One time I was repairing a computer at a tooling shop. Lots of big machines. Lots of grime.

I carried a computer across the floor to an air compressor because it was filled with black dust. When I carried it back I discovered oil trickling down my forearm.

Ends up it wasn't oil. I had cut myself and the blood had mixed with the computer dust to make black goo.

A couple years ago, I was replacing someone's CD-ROM in a tight-a$$ed Aptiva case. I was trying to get the power connector out when suddenly it popped. I felt something funny on my thumb, and looked at it. It wasn't bleeding, but if I seperated the wound, I could see all the little veins and how neatly cut they were...I could also see my finger bone.
So, off to ER I went (I hadn't had a tetnis shot in a while, so I figured that slicing my thumb open on a dirty case was as good an excuse as any). 8 hours later....I finally got to see the doctor told him, "Listen, I just need it professionally cleaned, and a shot so I don't get lockjaw."
In the bed beside me was a guy who got a piece of metal in his eye while working on a factory line, and on the bed beside him was a 15 year old girl who had stomach pains and whined that she didn't like needles.
Hehe. The first thing I said to the nurse was, "Well, I don't like needles...but NOT as much as that girl. Just stick me fast and we'll get this over with."
She just sighed...tough time with that girl, I guess.

Actually, funny you should mention it. I AM missing about half a thumb and about 1/16th of my index finger, but it has nothing to do with computers.....I just underestimated the fuse length on a homemade pipe bomb!!!
