Lying customers

When I was a bench tech, I got a pc in to repair with an empty hard drive. It wasn't even formatted ( I think the (L)user fdisked it!)
Anyway, when I called him to tell him that he had nothing, he flipped out. He said it was fine when he brought it in. He demanded to speak to my boss, and accused me of deleting his data and demanded financial compensation.

My boss calmly asked him why he brought it in if it was fine and informed him that he owed *US* $75. The guy came in and demanded his pc, and the boss said "sure, give me the 75 bucks and you can have it." The guy flipped, said he would sue us and left. As far as I know, they STILL have his peecee! <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

That is why we made them sign a release saying that we were not responsible for any data.

Another way, is to turn the machine on when the customer is still there and verify the problem together. The customer can't lie afterwards.

Lying customers are like a cheepskate trying to skip out on the check after dinner...you know who im talkin about JOHN <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

The users I deal with hear whatever they want.

Saying that a tech will call and schedule an appointment to come over and will probably call tomorrow as it is the end of the day translates to "He said that a tech would be comming right out".

Saying you will need to get me this and this information and call me back with it translates to "He said that he would call me right back".

Etc., etc., etc.

lying users...? don't get me started!

Some of the Users that I have had to deal with are just the same.

You know the ones that say that they had a faster machine (hardware wise) than the one they bought in then accuse you of changing parts around, the ones that say they are running Win98 when the command line version shows win95, etc, etc.

I can sympathise with you as most of the users will treat the Techs like crap in ways that they wouldn't even dream of with other services such as Plumbers, Builders, Mechanics, etc.

Why should we put up with this?

Thats why I used to put a 'changable' tariff for jobs up on the wall, so if a trouble customer came in wanting work done they paid a little bit extra for the hassles that you get afterwards.

Isn't it amazing that Users want a job done under warranty when it is something that they have done?? If they attempted to strip down their engine in their car without knowing what they are doing, would they expect the motor company to put it back together FOC??? I don't think so somehow......

I dont understand, when you go to the doctor, and he asks, how did you get hurt, you dont lie to him/her (most of the time, occasional drunken stupor the night before)

It makes me mad. Even though I do not work with public clients (government agency) I get all kinds of crazy things. I have been accused of darn well near everything imaginable, only for the users ignorance to shine through at the end....
