Bad NT network!!!
I have a pure IP/NT network that is driving me mad, and I hope someone might be able to get me going in the right direction.
What is going on is, I have a network that can't be seen by the rest, (most of the time). The networks are 192.251.x.x and 10.1.2.x. The 10 net can see everyone but the networks on the 192 net can't see computers on the 10.1.2.x network.
You can ping computers on the 10 net from the 192 net and visa versa, if you go to find computer and put in the computer name you can get to the computers but you just cant see them in Network Neighborhood.
The networks are using both WINS and DNS to resolve names witch seems to work fine, (both on 192 network) but I don't think that is the problem because computers on both sides can resolve names.
Any thoughts (no matter how small) would be greatly appreciated.

subnet masks and gateways???
-
Gateways on our network are allway 6, so 10.1.2.6. Mask Is also 255.255.255.0 company wide. Both networks have about 100 devices that work fine but you just cant browse to them.
Thanks for the reply

The MCP standard answer to that would be to place another WINS server as push/pull partner on the 10.x.x.x network. I'm assuming there's a switch or router between the segments, not sure why...
A test would be to make up an (lm)hosts (not sure which) file for one of the machines on the 10.x.x.x segment and see if you can browse the machines on the 192.x.x.x segment. If that's the case, put another wins server on the 10 segment. Alternatively just make a standard hosts file for the network, but that wouldn't work with DHCP.
Disclaimer: It's been a while since I dealt with name resolution, so the lmhosts/hosts terminology may be messed up.

It sounds (somewhat) more like a problem with your Browser service. Browsing is established through Broadcasts. See if your router can route these broadcasts to the other network so they are added to the browse list. I really don't think this is it...
What is throwing me off is your WINS server. Do you have a WINS server on each subnet? If not, you will need to set up a proxy WINS server. If you have to two, make sure they are pushing and pulling off EACH OTHER, not just one. With one able to read everything and the other one isn't, then your WINS server may not be updating its information properly. This sounds more like the solution.

Thanks for all of the replies!!! I would agree that I need to put a wins server on the 10net but I don't think that is the problem. I looked at the wins database and it does have all of the devices that are one the 10 net and can also resolve all of the 10 net addresses.
I also think it may be a browser problem, so I tried to force a server on the 10net to be the master browser but it never would go. Does any one know the best to make a computer a master browser?

you don't mention what the device or method is that is connecting the two networks together. is it a bridge, router, multihomed server, or something else? are you using nat, pat, ip routing, or what to help communicate between the networks.
seems to me that the device bridging the networks is not working properly. more info might help.
good luck,
