IE Starts Everytime the System Boots!!

This is driving me crazyyyyyyyyy!! I have a system in the shop that trys to dial the internet every single time you reboot it. Immediately following the boot process it dials the internet! I've checked all the "normal" things that would cause this. I've removed everything from startup, checked all the software to insure its not calling for the net, plus 10,000 other things. Nothing helps!!! I'm grasping here.............help!!! Any Ideas??

The system is an AMD 500 K6\2 running on an Asus VM99 mobo, 64mg PC100.

just a wild idea but maybe some enterprising young genius found it cute to make a command line in the autoexec.bat to fire it up.

had this same problem 7 or 8 times over the past few months.... it was usually a virus... most of the time it was "pretty park"

i came across this problem recently. it was a virus. i don't have the name handy, but check to see if notepad.exe is larger than 53kb. if it is you have this new virus.

Easy fix. Restart the machine is MS-DOS Mode, change directories to \Windows\System and then rename rpcss.exe to *.ex_ (or anything other than *.exe)

Restart the machine after taking rpcss.exe out of the loop and it'll stop dialing automatically.

this might be a stupid question,but did you see if it's in startup in msconfig ? try unchecking it ?

I would be cautious of this. If it is a virus it might try to email your computer/personal info.

It's not a virus and you're not gonna find it in MSCONFIG. This is a DCOM-related condition that can be resolved by either modifying the registry entries -or- renaming rpcss.exe

try renaming this one file in the %windir%\System directory & I'm fairly confident that you'll see the problem will be resolved.

On more possibility, I ran into once. A client had all their systems configured to launch Outlook at boot up and Outlook was set to dial and check for mail when launched....other than that, pretty park and its derivitives are the most common culprits.

I had a system that did this in the shop the other day. If the system has Quicbooks on it then Quicbooks isn't set up correctly for the Internet. Go into Quicbooks and then go to Internet Setup and set it for Dial-Up Connection instead of Always Connected to the Internet. If Quicbooks isn't on the system then it is probably a virus.

Usually the cuplrit is a virus. BUT just a suggestion... go into the reg and make sure no registration reminders are trying to load... U-leads photoimpact and several other programs try to dial automatically in order to register... check ALL your run/runonce leads in the registry.

Great responses gang!! Thanks!! I've exhausted all the traditional causes for this but I didn't consider the Pretty Park virus. The registry is also a possiblity. I check for program registration as the cause already and thats not it. I'll put all the things I haven't tried yet into action tommorrow and I'll get back and let ya know what works.. Also if it is not a virus. I ran into something the other day like this but I forgot to mention it... (cuz it's been awhile):

If the customer is running Lotus Smart Suite '97 and the Start Center bar thingy is loaded at startup, it will cause the computer to try and connect 2 or 3 times. This is because in 2 or three of the drawers there are bookmarks that automatically load. Find the folders in the drawer that say "dismiss page" and then delete the folders from the drawer.

Sorry I didn't mention this before as a possibility, but it's been awhile since '97

Charon was on the right track!! It did turn out to be a dcom problem but renaming that file did not help. I had to manually change the dcom setting in the registry.
