How many of you have a Linux box?

In the past I haven't been impressed with linux, until I got Mandrake 8. BIG difference between it an Mandrake 7.1.
Since then I have built up a dedicated Linux box, just for me to do testing on, and playing around.
Before 8, I thought that on the desktop, for the average, and above average users/tech, it had about the same use ability as dos 6.22/windows 3.11. With the new release, it think it has a good run for desktop replacement, due to its updated KDE, and Xwindows 4.
Just kinda wondering, since I am somewhat new to linux, what all can you do (or not do)

keep in mind that I was referring to desktop, I know that Linux is a decent to excellent server (depending on hardware and tasks)

My home box is loaded with Linux only.

I also just recently installed Linux onto a machine. Here are the pluses and minuses that a newbie Linux (although I am a fairly advanced with Windows) techy got out of it.

Pros:
- Easy setup
- Quick install!
- Partitioning was easy (just hit auto-allocate!)
- KDE is a pretty nice program
- HardDrake detected almost everything automatically
- Quick booting
- Good free support

Cons:
- BITCH to get a modem working in Linux.. I had to load Win98SE and dual boot to get the machine internet access. Still working on getting a 33.6 modem to install (hardware based)
- DVD access is lacking (non-existant? although http://www.livid.com is working on a nice player)
- installing software (RPMs) can be a little daunting if you have to install a bunch of them and not sure what order to install them in
- For some reason I've just found linux not as stable as Windows (on machines I've installed it on), but I'm SURE that has to do with me not having the knowledge to fix problems that arise as easily as Windows.
- Using BASH is a little trickier than DOS <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Hmmm... now the modem is working <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> It still says it's a 14.4.. but I'm getting 5-8kbps download speeds, so no biggie <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I guess now linux will probably be my main OS now. I can finally switch GRUB to make Linux my default starting OS. WOOHOO! <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I've used Slackware, Red Hat, Corel Linux and Mandrake.

All were installed on a dual boot system.

Unfortunately, I've had to remove Linux for now as it was using up HD real estate that I needed for, hum, games <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

My favourites were Mandrake and Corel.

Im alson a newbie to Linux, I have Mandrake 8.0 on my system now. I have tried RedHat and Corel. So far, I am happy with Mandrake

Well I did have a Linux box, with Mandrake 8..it was a pretty interesting OS but it just didn't fulfill some of my daily likes and needs, e.g. the fonts were all screwed up, no internet explorer or Macromedia products, etc. It was very nice but a bit difficult to use

I plan to install it alongside Windows on this computer, but I don't think I'll be using it as my main OS, considering the hardware that it does not yet support and the lack of support and friendliness.

But it sure is very interesting, I recommend that anybody should try it if they're halfway-decent with computers.

My box at home runs Debian unix, and Win98SE for games.

Bash is an excellent prompt, helped by the fact that there are manuals included for all your commands, something DOS didnt have, and if your coming from a DOS fluent background, you shouldnt have any major hassles running any of the shells.

And like i say, chicks dig linux.

I had Corel Linux loaded on an old Thinkpad 486SL laptop that was given to me. You could load Win95 on it, but with only 4MB of RAM forget about doing anything more intensive than playing Freecell. Unfortunately my sister-in-law needed a computer desperately, and since I didn't pay anything for it, I didn't have a lot of trouble letting it go. Plus it was useless to me. But it looked cool!

Yep. I got a box here running Red Hat 7.1, and I use it as my firewall/router. I use to dual boot 98SE/RH7, but when I switched to 2K only, I had all the stability and compatibility I needed in one convenient package. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I have a Pentium 133 router running Debian 2.0, a 166MMX running Slackware 4.5 and Apache (for showing people that want to see the low-overhead file- and webpage- serving capabilities,) and an Athlon 750 running Mandrake 8.0 (for showing to people that want to see a pretty desktop and lots of nice icons and wallpapers.) I have another Athlon 750 running Windows ME, and a Celeron 400 running Win2K, and they don't match up as far as performance. Just have to keep my games and web surfing on the WinTel boxes and my serious work on the Linux boxes, and I'm fine.

I have a Dell Latitude CPi 266 running redhat 7 - runs great - the x games are fun, but I cannot do anything with it yet, still trying though.
