Backups to CD-RW?

For business clients I always recommend a decent tape backup system, but lately a lot have been wanting to use CD-RWs for their backups - mainly because it's cheaper I guess.

So, what do you think is the best way to implement a backup system using a CD writer?

I have used Adaptec Easy CD creator for this purpose before. Just created a CD layout with all the data files and directories selected and then showed the users how to open the layout and record it to a CD. Some of the problems with this however, is that if you select a directory that contains documents, it selects all the documents that are in the directory at the time of creating the layout. If the users then put more documents in this directory they aren't automatically selected unless they create a new CD layout.
Are there any actual backup programs that will write to CD-RWs? Preferably something that will do a scheduled backup too. It needs to be as "fool proof" as possible.

Have you tried the backup in win98...i'm not sure if it will add the new documents, but worth a try...you can also schedule it to run at a specific time (it won't start the backup but the backup program will start and they can start the backup manually)..also search www.zdnet.com for a download, i downloaded some, but I don't remember the names...good luck

yes, but you have to format it with direct cd first

the back up program that comes with windows will not use CD-r or rw. but there is a program available from tiger direct that will do it. i dont remember the name but its like 29.99. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

The disc must first be available as a drive in Windows, use DirectCD, Prassi abcd, or you're choice of packet-writing softwre for CDRW. I also saw a program on the Windrivers main page recently, called Backup To CDRW, haven't tried it yet but it sounds like a good idea.

If you run it from Windows in an MS-Dos Prompt it should be able to use your CD-Writer

Nero has the built in option to backup your HD to CD-RW, and will span multiple Cd's too.

NTI backup , not sure but you may be able to get a time limited version to download.

dont like take 2 or any of the commercial addons ie easy cd or nero as they tend to want to use a lot of disks.

the backup program that comes with win98 WILL work with a cd-rw that has been formatted with direct cd....it is simple and you can set it to automatically overwrite the files. The only thing it will not do is automatically do a backup, but you can schedule backup to run at a specific time each day then your customer can run the backup <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
