Even though this might sound dumb, I had a motherboard once where pin 1 was marked wrong. The silkscreening on the board was backwards, and the manual was backwards. That was just when they started putting the IDE controllers on the motherboard. Although usually when the cable is backwards, the drive light stays lit, I guess that may not always be true.
